Quest Reborn How to Beat Gregg

The laughing drop-in boss, the coin stun, and the lobby crafts that do not trade.

Gregg Guide

Gregg is not a story boss. He is a drop-in fight added on 25 April 2024: a bearded humanoid in black clothes and a feather hat who can fall out of the ceiling after you clear a room, laugh, and ask for 75 seconds of your life. Beat him and you get extra loot, gold, and 1–3 crafting materials. Fail the timer and he laughs again and leaves with nothing. He yields no EXP. This page is the Quest Reborn guide for that loop.

He does not spawn in legacy Desert Temple or Winter Outpost, Wave Defense, Boss Raids, or event maps. Remaster Desert and the later story doors can host him. Gilded Skies has the most rooms. Yokai Peak can spawn him in every non-boss room. Volcanic Chambers and Aquatic Temple are stingy — often a single room.

The fight in one minute

Gregg’s health scales to the dungeon you are in. Damage you take from his coins is a percent of your max health, so a stamina stack does not make the coins tickle. Armor pots do not save a greedy stand in Coin Rain. Rings of Power are the exception the community still cites.

  • Wealth Shield (passive) — absorbs about 95% of incoming damage until you strip it.
  • Coin Throw — three linear coin shots (two at the start). Getting hit can root you. Treat it as “do not stand in the line.”
  • Coin Rain — red circles plus a personal gold coin only you can see. Pick up the gold coins. When the party collects them, Gregg drops his treasure, frowns, loses the golden tooth, and the shield drops for about fifteen seconds. That is the burn window.

The dungeon timer pauses while he is up. Boost potion timers (XP, luck, speed, health) do not pause. Room barriers stay shut until he dies or despawns. He can only appear once per run. If you miss him, you will not get a second laugh in the same lobby.

Bring a party. Online co-op is the design. Solo can work on early remaster rooms if you already know the coin, but late maps punish a missed pickup.

Drops, Extra Item, and Ultimates

A kill pays three loot rolls (six with Gregg’s Bounty), gold that sometimes triples, and materials. Loot is based on your level and the current dungeon. Extra Item does not add a Gregg roll unless you actually used a Bounty — that quirk survived the Abyssal Void patch. Ultimate weapons from Northern Lands and Void do not drop off Gregg. Farm Hofund and Voidspire on the bonus bosses, not on the laughing man. See How to get Ultimates.

Material count per kill: one piece most of the time (about 85%), two about 10%, three about 5%.

Four materials, four dungeon groups

  • Warforged Metal — Desert Temple (remaster), The Underworld, Steampunk Sewers, Enchanted Forest, Abyssal Void.
  • Obsidian Chunk — Winter Outpost (remaster), Samurai Palace, Orbital Outpost, Northern Lands.
  • Gold Bar — Pirate Island, The Canals, Volcanic Chambers, Gilded Skies.
  • Astral Amethyst — King’s Castle, Ghastly Harbor, Aquatic Temple, Yokai Peak.

Exchange leftover mats at the Craftsman at a 2:1 rate. The workshop sits in the beginner lobby next to the blacksmith. There is no Craftsman in Lobby 2. If you live in the trade floor, teleport back to Lobby 1 to craft. Read the full door list on the Dungeon List so you are not farming the wrong mat on a map you already outgrew.

Champion and Oracle crafts

These legendaries are not tradable, not sellable, and not upgradeable. Stats are fixed. Crafting the next weapon in the chain deletes the previous one from your inventory. Pick Warrior (Champion) or Mage (Oracle) and stay on that ladder. A hybrid craft is a gold and mat sink.

Approximate rungs:

  • Champion’s Oath / Oracle’s Gaze — level 80, 75K power. 15 Metal, 5 Obsidian, 15 Gold Bars, 15 Amethyst (50 mats).
  • Champion’s Fury / Oracle’s Wisdom — level 120, about 4M power. +20 / 15 / 20 / 25 (80 more; 130 total).
  • Champion’s Judgement / Oracle’s Revelation — level 160, about 44M. +15 / 50 / 40 / 50 (155 more; 285 total).
  • Champion’s Destiny / Oracle’s Ascendance — level 200, about 400M. +65 / 75 / 80 / 100 (320 more; 605 mats on the full climb).

Destiny and Ascendance are a long-term account project, not a weekend. They are still below Voidspire and Effigy for a finished Warrior or Mage in Abyssal Void. Use them as a guaranteed ladder while you wait on bonus-boss luck. They will not replace a God-pot Void weapon on the Weapons tier list.

New dungeon loot can sit behind a developer delay before Gregg or dailies can roll it. Void gear waited. Do not assume a brand-new door feeds the craftsman on day one.

Gregg’s Bounty

For 3,000 Platinum you can force a spawn in a random legal room and add three extra loot drops for everyone in the party. One Bounty per run. Chat announces it in bold red. Do not stack two. If a stranger buys one, you still get the extra rolls — say thanks, then play the coins. Platinum is a real spend. Treat Bounty as a party gift, not as a substitute for Hardcore Nightmare farming.

Practical farm notes

  • Gold Bars: Pirate Island, The Canals, or Gilded Skies. Hardcore reset after checking early rooms is a common speed trick on maps with few spawns.
  • Astral Amethyst: King’s Castle, Aquatic Temple (one spawn — reset after room 3 if you are hunting), or Yokai Peak.
  • Gilded Skies and Yokai Peak are the lazy “he might be in every hallway” maps.
  • Do not stand in Coin Rain to “DPS through the shield.” You will not.

Codes will not spawn Gregg. The Codes Hub is empty. Daily rewards do not replace materials. If a trader offers you a Champion weapon, they are lying — those items cannot leave the account that crafted them. Inspect anyway: How to trade.

When the laugh starts, pick up your coin. When the shield drops, dump Q and E. When he leaves, vendor junk and go back to the Guides Hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does Gregg drop Ultimate weapons?

No. Hofund, Laevateinn, Voidspire, and Effigy come from Nightmare bonus bosses, not from Gregg.

Does Extra Item add a Gregg drop?

Not unless you used Gregg's Bounty. The pass does not automatically extra-roll a random Gregg spawn.

Can I trade Champion or Oracle weapons?

No. They cannot be traded, sold, or upgraded. Crafting the next rung removes the previous weapon.

Where is the Craftsman?

Beginner lobby, next to the blacksmith. Lobby 2 has no craftsman NPC.
