Merchant Guide

The Merchant is the main shop NPC in the Dungeon Quest lobby. He sells a rotating selection of items for both gold and Robux. Unlike a real RPG vendor the Merchant does not buy back your items — he only sells. Understanding what he carries, when he rotates, and what is worth your gold separates smart players from ones who buy the shiny thing and regret it.

Two currencies, two inventories

The Merchant carries separate gold and Robux inventories. Gold items are purchased with in-game currency earned from dungeons. Robux items are purchased with real money. Both inventories rotate on a schedule.

Gold items include:

  • Pets (Hound, Imp, Fairy)
  • Crafting materials in bundles
  • Cosmetic enchants and auras
  • Convenience items like XP boosts

Robux items include:

  • Premium pets (Phoenix, Titan)
  • Exclusive cosmetics
  • Game passes (VIP, Extra Item, Hardcore, Free Skill Reset)

Item rotation schedule

The Merchant refreshes his inventory on a timer. Gold items tend to rotate more frequently than Robux items. Some items are always available (core pets), while others appear for limited windows.

When an item you want appears, buy it immediately. Do not assume it will be there tomorrow. The rotation is not communicated in-game — the only way to track it is through the wiki or community observation.

The Updates Hub tracks major rotation changes when they affect gameplay.

Gold pet purchases

The three gold pets — Hound, Imp, and Fairy — are the core Merchant items for progression-focused players. Buy them in this order:

  1. Hound first — auto gold pickup saves time on every run. It pays for itself.
  2. Imp second — extra loot drops compound over Nightmare farming sessions.
  3. Fairy third — daily reward amplification is a quality-of-life upgrade.

All three scale in price with your character level. The actual gold cost increases as you level, but the relative value also increases because you are farming bigger gold piles.

What not to buy from the Merchant

Do not buy weapons or armor from the Merchant. His gear is always inferior to Nightmare dungeon drops. The moment you spend gold on a Merchant weapon, you have reduced the gold available for upgrades that actually matter.

Do not buy crafting materials in bulk when you can farm them from Gregg runs. The Merchant’s material bundles are convenience purchases for players who do not want to run dungeons.

Do not buy pets from traders in Lobby 2. The Merchant is the only legitimate source for pets. Anyone selling a pet outside the Merchant is scamming you — pets are account-bound and cannot be traded.

Robux purchasing guidelines

If you are spending real money, prioritize in this order:

  1. VIP game pass — removes ads, provides the VIP enchantment aura, and includes other quality-of-life benefits.
  2. Extra Item game pass — adds one extra loot roll to every kill and daily rewards. This compounds heavily over time.
  3. Phoenix pet — one revive per dungeon run. Good for learning Nightmare mechanics.
  4. Titan pet — periodic AoE damage. Nice-to-have, not essential.

Free Skill Reset is useful for experimenters but not a priority purchase.

VIP enchantment and status

VIP pass holders get a persistent golden aura that marks them in-game. This is a visual status symbol only — it provides no combat advantage. However, it signals to other players that you are a supporter of the game, which some players value for social reasons.

VIP also removes in-game advertisements, which can improve frame rates on lower-end devices.

How to access the Merchant

The Merchant NPC is in the main lobby — the starting area when you load into Dungeon Quest. He is near the center of the lobby alongside the blacksmith, enchanter, and daily reward chest.

Lobby 2, the trade-focused secondary lobby, does not have a Merchant. If you spend time in Lobby 2, you need to teleport back to Lobby 1 to access the shop.

Summary

The Merchant is your gold-to-convenience exchange. Buy the Hound early, the Imp when you are farming Nightmare, and the Fairy when dailies are part of your routine. Avoid his weapons and armor — dungeon drops are always better. For Robux, VIP and Extra Item are the only essential purchases; Phoenix and Titan are comfort upgrades.

Track rotations, buy pets when they appear, and never trade gold for a pet in Lobby 2.
